Unsecured radioactive sources have caused deaths and serious injuries in many parts of the world, and these have been well documented in a number of IAEA publications. In addition, economic losses can be considerable. It is recognised that more guidance is needed to try and avoid further events involving orphan sources and to prevent deliberate attempts to acquire radioactive sources for malevolent purposes.
The IAEA has produced a publication (IAEA Nuclear Security Series No. 11) that provides practical guidance in assessing and implementing security measures commensurate with the risks associated with different radioactive sources in use and storage. The publication is a useful reference for all licensees and owners that use, transport or store sealed radioactive sources. This document can be downloaded here (PDF - 740 kB).
